Jean-Honore Fragonard
1732-1806 France-Rococo
|
Brief Biography-Jean-Honoré Fragonard from the village of Grasse began his apprenticeship with Jean-Baptiste Cardin. After six months of being unhappy with the routine, he joined the atelier of Francois Boucher, who had earlier rejected him. Fragonard spent four years with Boucher and, with his encouragement, entered the esteemed Prix de Rome and won it in 1752. He studied in Rome in 1756, where the works of Giovanni Battista Tiepolo and Pietro da Cortona strongly influenced him. He collaborated with the landscape artist Hubert Robert in Rome and Venice, who became a good friend.
Fragonard entered the academy back in Paris; however, he concentrated on doing more congenial type paintings for which there was a high demand amongst many wealthy Parisians. Unfortunately, his market seized up during the revolution and with the advent of the Neoclassical style, after which he earned a meagre living. His son Alexandre Evariste entered the atelier of Jacques Louis David, who got him an administrative job in the Museums Commission and accommodation in the Louvre. Sadly, he lost his job and housing in 1799 and died in relative poverty in 1806. |
