Baltazar Gomes Figueira

Brief Biography-Baltazar Gomes Figueira was the father of the renowned artist Josefa de Óbidos, whom he tutored at an early age. His travels to Andalucía, on military service with the Saint Mary of Cadiz garrison, led to him marrying a noblewoman in Seville. While studying art, he encountered notable Spanish artists such as Francisco de Zurbarán. When he returned to Portugal with his daughter, he had achieved a successful career and soon became a court painter for the House of Bragança. In addition, he received many private commissions, one of note was Our Lady of Conception for the monastery of Alcobaça. |
