Brief Biography-Erasmus Engert, or Erasmus Ritter von Engerth, was born in Vienna; he studied at the Art Academy. His studies took him to Italy, where his paintings were of historical subjects and portraits. He undertook many copies of old masters in Vienna and eventually concentrated on restoration. He became director of the art gallery in Belvedere Palace in 1857. Emperor Franz Joseph I knighted him in 1865. |
