Arthur Devis
1712-1787 England/Rococo
|
Brief Biography-Arthur Devis from Preston left for London in 1728 to work for the Flemish sporting artist Peter Tillemans. He studied with Tillemans’ copying artists, such as Giovanni Paolo Pannini and Jan Frans van Bloemen. His works exhibit an influence from Tillemans. He became a recognised portraitist in London by the 1740s, which lasted until 1760, when his style was considered outdated. He was made the president of the Free Society of Artists, during which time he made a living from art restoration. In 1783, he settled in Brighton, where he lived for the rest of his life. |
