Charles Demuth

1883-1935 America/Precisionism

Brief Biography-Charles Demuth from Lancaster, Pennsylvania, was considered a champion of Precisionism. He lived most of his life in his hometown whenever he was not travelling to study. Demuth studied at the Franklin and Marshall Academy, Drexel University, and the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts, taking classes with Thomas Anschutz. In Paris, he entered the Académie Colarossi and the Académie Julian. He became a leading modern artist in America and moved from watercolours to tempera and oils. Fauvism, Dada, and Cubism influenced his style.
He had a lifelong health problem with his hip, which caused a limp. Then, in his later life, he had diabetes, which became the cause of his death at the early age of fifty-one.
