Brief Biography-Johan Christian Dahl from Bergen, Norway, ranked amongst the top European artists of the romantic era. The artist Lyder Sagen championed him and arranged his study at the Academy in Copenhagen, and he became devoted to landscape painting. The works of Jacob van Ruisdael bore a strong influence on him along with Christoffer Wilhelm Eckersberg and later the pictures of his friend Caspar David Friedrich. Prince Christian Frederik became one of his most supportive patrons after seeing his works. With the acquaintance of Friedrich, he established a successful career in Dresden and was appointed professor at the Academy of Dresden, a post he held until he died. Johan spent a brief period in Italy at the behest of Prince Christian Frederik, where Italianate landscapes inspired him. He made several trips to Norway and co-founded the National Gallery of Norway. He died in Dresden, and his remains returned to Bergen in 1934. |
