Brief Biography-Fernand Cormon of Paris began studying with Jean-François Portaels in Brussels and completed his studies under Alexandre Cabanel and Eugène Fromentin in Paris. He entered the Salon in 1868, where he won awards for two of his paintings; his subjects were historical and religious. He spent some time in Tunisia before returning to Paris to set up his art school. He achieved a high standing and mentored many notable students. Two of his more wayward students were Vincent van Gogh and Toulouse Lautrec. |
