Juan Carreño de Miranda

1614-1685 Spain/Baroque

Brief Biography-Juan Carreño de Miranda, or Don Juan Carregño, was born in Avilés, the son of a nobleman. In Madrid, his masters were Pedro de las Cuevas and Bartolomé Román, and he devoted his work to religious paintings in his early career. In 1669 Carreño became the painter of the Bedchamber to Charles II, concentrating mainly on portraiture afterwards. Rubens and Titian initially influenced him, and he later painted in the styles of Velazquez and Van Dyke. However, he was considered superior to both by Palomino. Finally, in 1671, the queen made him a court painter. He died in Madrid in 1685.
