Ludovico Carracci

Brief Biography-Ludovico Carracci was born in Bologna in 1555. He became a disciple of Prospero Fontana and studied the masters Tintoretto at Venice, Andrea del Sarto at Florence, Romano at Mantua and Correggio at Parma, and other renowned artists of those towns. Ludovico had less talent than his cousins Annibale and Agostino; nevertheless, he excelled in religious works. In Bologna, Ludovico founded the school known as the Academia delgi Incamminati, the Academy of the Progressives.He had help from his two cousins and brought from Rome casts and numerous books on art. He also acquired the assistance of the renowned anatomist Anthony de la Tour for instruction, who greatly inspired his students. Amongst his many noted students were Domenichino, Guido, Lanfranco and Guercino. Many of Ludovico’s paintings are in Bologna and in churches around Lombardy. One of his notable works is a fresco with Pilate Washing his Hands in the church of La Madonna di Galliera in Bologna. |
