John George Brown
1831-1913 (b. England) America
|
Brief Biography-John George Brown was from Durham, England. His parents apprenticed him to the glass-cutting trade for seven years. He learned art at night when he was working in Newcastle-on-Tyne and Edinburgh.
In 1853, he moved to New York and studied at the National Academy of Design. In 1856, he set up a studio in Brooklyn while his employer in the Flint Glassworks supported his studies. He became a National Academician at the Academy and became vice president.
Brown’s work is famed for his portrayal of street urchins; however, he also painted landscapes, some in the style of Bierstadt. John George Brown was the most successful genre painter, of his time, in America. |
