Brief Biography-Osip Emmanuilovich Braz was a Russian realist painter. He studied at the Odessa Art School, The Munich Academy of Fine arts and finished at The Saint Petersburg Academy of Fine arts under Ilya Repin. Braz collected and restored works of art alongside painting and achieved considerable success through his portraiture. He lived in France from 1907 to 1911. He became an Academician in 1914, was a curator of the department of Dutch paintings at the Hermitage in 1918 and directed a studio in the Saint Petersburg Academy in 1920. Braz was arrested in 1924 for suspected espionage and imprisoned for three years. During his incarceration, the state seized his art collection. After a spell in Germany, when he was released, he moved to Paris, where he painted and dealt with art for the remainder of his days. |
