Hieronymus Bosch
1450-1516 Netherlands/Northern Renaissance
|
Brief Biography-Hieronymus Bosch was born into a family of artists in s-Hertogenbosch, where he spent his whole life. Speculation is he named himself Bosch after his hometown, as his real name was Jheronimous Anthonissen Van Aken.
His grandfather painted a fresco in the Cathedral of Saint John, where his father also painted figurines and furniture. He may have learned how to paint from his father. The town of s-Hertogenbosch was very religious, and there was a Brethren of the Common Life foundation, of which Bosch was a member. Religion was the stimulus for Bosch’s paintings.
He married Aleyt Goyaerts van den Meervenne who provided a considerable dowry, and he achieved an excellent reputation for his work, receiving several commissions, primarily for altarpieces. Unfortunately, facts are scarce about his life; however, scholars say he died a famous and respected artist. |
