Brief Biography-Carl Heinrich Bloch was a native of Copenhagen. His merchant father wanted him to join the Navy against his wishes; however, he was determined to be a painter from an early age. He studied at the Royal Danish Academy of Art and gained a travel grant to study abroad. His first stop was Holland, where the works of Rembrandt had a significant influence on him. He excelled with portraiture, and when he went to Italy, he soaked up the Italian influence so much that he stayed until 1865. In Denmark, he undertook a series of paintings for the Chapel at Frederiksborg. This work was to last for fourteen years and has become one of his most notable achievements.. |
