Brief Biography-Alonso Berruguete of Paredes de Nava was a sculptor, painter, and architect. His father, Pedro Berruguete, taught him, and he went to Italy in 1504, gaining an admirable reputation, mentioned in the highest esteem by Michelangelo and Vasari. Andrea del Sarto was his contemporary, and Leonardo da Vinci and Raphael influenced his work. Berruguete worked in Rome and Florence before returning to Spain in 1517, bringing an influence of mannerism and becoming a painter to Charles V, who ennobled him in 1559. His most notable work is on the choir stalls in Toledo Cathedral, done between 1539 and 1543. He died at Alcala in 1561. |
