Sir William Beechey
1753-1839 England/Portraitist
|
Brief Biography-William Beechey was famous for portrait painting; however, he also did landscapes. The Royal Academy of Schools in London admitted him between 1772 and 1774. Johann Zoffany may have tutored him; however, it might have been for a short time, as Zoffany was in England between 1758 and 1772 before leaving for Italy.
Beechey became a successful portraitist in London in 1787 and, in 1793, was appointed Portrait Painter to Queen Charlotte. In 1798, he was elected a Royal Academician and received a Knighthood in the same year. He had two sons and a brother who were also artists. He influenced many young artists of the day, notably a young John Constable and his son Admiral Richard Brydges Beechey, who became a successful Marine Artist. | |
