Francisco Bayeu y Subias

1734-1795 Spain/Rococo

 

Brief Biography-Francisco Bayeu y Subías from Zaragoza underwent his apprenticeship with José Luzán Martínez in Tarragona. He studied under Antonio Gonzales Velázquez before moving to Madrid, where he entered the Academia Real de Bellas Artes de Fernando and later became Director. Francisco de Goya y Lucientes joined Francisco in his studio in Zaragoza and married his sister Josefa Bayeu. In Madrid, Francisco was made painter to King Charles III and worked with Anton Raphael Mengs in the Royal Palaces of Madrid and Aranjuez. He painted frescoes in the Churches of Zaragoza and Toledo and worked with his brother Ramón and Goya in the Tapestry Factory of Santa Bárbara.
