Elisabeth Jerichau Baumann
1819-1881 Denmark/Portraiture
|
Brief Biography-Elisabeth Jerichau Baumann was born in Zoliborz in Warsaw to German Parents. She studied art in Düsseldorf at the Art Academy. Her artistic career began in Düsseldorf before moving to Rome in 1845. Baumann married in Rome to Jens Adolf Jerichau, a Danish sculptor. They had nine children throughout their marriage; two died at a young age, and many became reputable artists.
After four years in Rome, they moved to Copenhagen, where Elisabeth, after experiencing prejudice because of where she was born, eventually established herself as a portraitist. She extensively travelled through Europe, exhibiting in Germany, England, France, and Sweden. In addition, Elisabeth toured the Middle East, gained entry to harems, and was permitted to paint scenes from within. She received commissions from the Royal Courts of Russia, England, Greece, and Denmark. | |
