Marie Bashkirtseff
1858-1884 Ukraine/France-Painter and Sculptor
|
Brief Biography-Marie Bashkirtseff was from a noble family in Poltava, Ukraine. After her parents separated, the family travelled around Europe before settling in a village they bought near Nice.
She began writing at the age of fourteen and studied languages. Music was her main ambition until laryngitis took her voice; hence, she turned to painting. The family moved to Paris, where she joined the Rodolphe Julian’s Academy, Gustave Boulanger and Jules Joseph Lefebvre were her tutors.
Jules Bastien Lepage was her main inspiration, and she took to painting the poorer folk on the streets of Paris. She became known for writing in the feminist newspaper La Citoyenne. At the age of twenty-six, she died prematurely from tuberculosis. Not all her works got displayed until after her death. | |
