Charles William Bartlett

1860-1940 England/Painting-Printing

Brief Biography-Charles William Bartlett was born in Bridport, Dorsetshire, England. He started to be a chemist; however, he decided that art was his passion and enrolled in the London Academy of Art. Bartlett went on to study at the Académie Julian in Paris under Gustave Boulanger and Jules Joseph Lefebvre. On returning to England, Bartlett married, but unfortunately, both his wife and son died in childbirth. He subsequently travelled Europe with Frank Brangwyn from Wales for several years. While travelling around Europe, he focused his art on peasant life.
He married when he returned to England in 1898 for a second time. He travelled to the Far East and Japan with his wife and had several paintings produced in Japanese prints and woodblocks. Instead of returning to England as they had intended, they settled in Hawaii, where they spent the remainder of their lives. He co-founded the Honolulu Printmakers in Hawaii.
