|
Brief Biography-Juan Sánchez Barba, a sculptor, was born in the mountains of Burgos. He principally carved figures in wood for altarpieces. Today, The Church of Our Lady of Mount Carmel, Madrid, has a carving of the Recumbent Christ over the altarpiece accompanied by paintings by Antonio de Pereda. He executed several statues for churches in Madrid; however, few of his works are extant today. For example, pieces by him perished in the fire of the chapel of San Isidro in San Andrés in 1936. Christ of the Agony is his most famous piece in the Oratory of Caballero de Gracia, a neoclassical-style church in Madrid. |
