Thomas Baines
1820-1875 England/Painted in Africa and Australia
|
Brief Biography-Thomas Baines was from Norfolk, England. He learned to paint as an apprentice coachbuilder, which included training in heraldic art. In his early twenties, Baines moved to South Africa and established himself as a marine artist and portraitist in Cape Town. He travelled back to England for a short period to work for the Royal Geographical Society, mapping South Africa.
In 1855, he joined a scientific expedition in northern Australia as a draughtsman and artist. He did extensive drawings of wildlife and paintings of Aborigines during the expedition’s sojourns. In 1857, he brought numerous works back to England. However, he spent most of his life in Africa.
