Harriet Backer

1845-1932 Norway-Impressionism/Realism

 

Brief Biography-Harriet Backer was from Holmestrand, Norway and moved to Oslo at twelve. She had schooling from notable Norwegian artists such as Johan Fredrik Eckersberg and later Knud Bergslien. Her travels took her to Munich and Paris, where impressionism inspired her; however, her style is considered more Realism. In her later years, she ran her art school, which included several students who became prominent artists in Norway. To this day, her work is highly regarded in Norway and throughout Europe.
