Brief Biography-Friedrich von Amerling was a portraitist from Vienna; He began studies at the age of twelve at the Academy of Arts, which lasted for nine years and another two years at the Academy in Prague. Then, he moved to London for a year, where the work of Thomas Lawrence swayed him. He travelled to most European countries during his lifetime, marrying four times. Amerling received numerous honours, including a knighthood. In Vienna, his castle became known as Amerlingschloessl. He worked mainly for the aristocracy and became an Austrian court painter. Teaching was his second career; one of his pupils was József Borsos, the Hungarian artist. To this day, Amerling is one of the foremost artists of Austria. |
