José de Alcibar

c. 1730-1803 Mexico

 

Brief Biography-José de Alcibar was a Mexican artist who mainly painted religious subjects and portraits of Mexican notables. He was born in Mexico City and was prominent in the late eighteenth century. Several churches throughout Mexico commissioned his work. In 1784, he was a founder member of the Royal Academy of Fine Arts of San Carlos. There is an influence in his style of painters from Spain who visited Mexico during the period.
